SOCIAL NETWORKING

Ahhhh, social networking. I do have some experience of this and enjoy the experience.
Back in the mid 90's the only social networking was chat rooms and the like.

Then 10 short years later ..........WOW.
About 18 months ago, while hearing my children .....facebook this and facebook that....well I had to dip my toe into this.

My daughter announced "How cool that you are joined facebook I am proud of you".
Since then I have entered into the games surveys etc. etc.
But unlike my children I have become a bit bored with the thing. So I might go on once a week to see who has been there also.

At our library we have been using a Wiki for some time now to put up ideas for change or suggestions for the library service. Procedures and

I have also noticed the use of twitter and facebook invitations on com. websites inviting people to watch their programs or products and to interact with them in the form of feedback.

This style of interaction could also be used in the libraries for feedback to surveys and suggestions from the public.

The article "Applying a new social media framework" was interesting and gave some room for thought - maybe there are uses in the Library maybe..... will have to think about it.

THANK YOU to the NSWPLN Learning 2.0 Team, for the opportunity to participate in this great programme ! I have learnt much and have impressed the kids on knowing about stuff they thought was only the domain of the X generation.

ONLINE APPLICATIONS

Google docs and Zoho fantastic aplications in libraries and in personal recreation.

I surfed the side show video. I can see this for me personally but for libraries , we will have to see. Basicly similar to powerpoint.

But for realy cool videos productions I use Animoto for an example http://animoto.com/play/srGuP0Ui5ALXyKexYZKSqQ?autostart=true

Zamzar and Slideshare OK but I couldn't access Thumbstacks - error message read: "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage").

Tried several times at different times of the day.

I have created several presentations but I cant seem to decide which to present.

Well here goes.......

MASHUP Jigsaw thanks to Big Huge Labs.

I love this jigsaw thingy as I have it on my desktop. It is cool all the stuff one can do. Copyright may be a problem depending on how the mashups are used/shared.
See (Paml's comment from Sept 08) in COMMENTS in Week 10.
I will try maps next time who knows where this will gooooo.
As for library application dressing up blogs, files, flyer's and all that other stuff we do to our cyber stuff will be refreshing . Instead of seeing the same old clip art AARRRH, publisher enhancements etc the world of imagination and it is only limited by this is really opening up to the techsavy.

PodCasts

"Pod casts" my kids have entered this phrase into the language around our home.
Yea just another mobile phone come computer game add on that computer hybrid generation X has latched onto and embraced as they do with techy toys. (SIDE BAR) I am one who is self taught computers, internet etc and I STILL think mobile phones should just be able to send and receive phone calls. Off the soap box now.
Comes week 9 Oh, pod casts Ho Hum.....WOOOOW I am hooked!!!!!!!! this is brilliant as to what one can do on his humble 186...(Joke). This is truly fantastic.
What a fantastic vehicle podcasts are. I can see them being utilised in a public library. Like other commenters they all seem to see a great future in Podcasts as they have written and I wont repeat but they are definitely right.
I went to the ABC's site and discovered the amazing amount of material there to be viewed this way. I assume many other utilities will or do offer this service.
And (Please excuse the conjunction starting this sentence*)what about the future , only time will tell where this will end up.

Answer boards and social searching

I've come across answer boards a lot and never really looked at them till I came across this module. I now understand how and why they work, and the concept of an online brains trust. Like anything posted on the internet you have to be weary of its accuracy of content.
I'm in to it. Have already answered one question in yahoo 7 answers.

Delicious Stuff

TAGGING AND ALL THAT STUFF
This is the link to my delicious account.
http://delicious.com/MOBILELIBRARYMAN

Delicious is a good idea for the sharing of websites found by yourself or onsharing other peoples finds and discoveries.
Finding the time to look them up or utilise them in other ways could end up being a major feat as you sift through all the different hits. Accuracy of the search engine can be a problem ie. I searched "mobilelibraries" and received heaps of hits about everything mobile phone to library locations etc. but not one on mobile libraries.
I would probably use this as a last resort solution.

It would be useful as a tool which was an easy way to create bookmarks that can be accessed from anywhere.
As I use about four computers in my workplace of which two are in the mobilelibrary and at least two are in the main library , not counting the three that I use at home it can be a bit of a bug bear when we have favorites bookmarked on one computer that is not on the one you are using now.

ALSO how many times has this happened to you when one gets a new computer or the hard disk dies or the laptop gets run over by a bus or abducted by aliens or you fall asleep with it in the bath AND you did'nt backup your favorites file. Darned anoying I"ll tell you.
As well it did take a while to actually place the link to my Blog. Hope everyone else worked it out.

Yeh! OK if this suits your own situations some times not everyones BUT hey its good to know its out there.

See ya's in the next posting.

Creating a blog post about my wiki surfing.

My wiki surfing led me to three little wiki's.
At book lovers it has some great ideas on feedback from patrons re their reading material.
I have found people love to discuss what they have just read especially if they hated it.
It is also good for me as i can absorb these discussions and use them as future book reviews to aid other patrons. We can never have too much reading related info like this wiki and other web sites that we keep hidden in our favorites folder.

The best practices wiki blew me away as I had come across this one earlier in this module 5.
As I looked down the menu items involving libraries and what a great resource this wiki contains, in the Service to Specific Groups heading there was no real mention of Mobile Library services. Sooooo something had to be done, as you dear readers of my blog might have noticed there is a closeness between me and Mobile library services. YES I subscribed to be able to edit this wiki (OH NO !!! another user name and password).
Still I have made my first wiki edit and it didn't hurt a bit.

Friends if you would like to follow the added adventures regarding mobile Libraries and library services in general ( it is highly recommended ) on this wiki you can find it at :http://www.libsuccess.org/index.php?title=Main_Page

Lastly I popped my foot into wookieepedia as the name had this poor surfer curious.
HAAAA it struck me ,of course that s what it is how obvious so how come I missed it .
SIGH
It must be a bloke thing.
A chuckle ensued as I sought out the little curios and info on the site.
Loved the logo in the top LH corner of the near wikipedia world transposed to the death star.

This module was good for me as our library uses a wiki for information , ideas and communication amongst the staff.
We have also created a Mobile Library wiki that has been introduced to all mobile libraries in NSW and will later be shared around Australia and then the World. ( I hope).
They work well if they are used. They don't reach their full potential if no one interacts with them.

A funny thing happened to me on the way home.

Shoalhaven Mobile Library
Built by Brimarco in 1999 and the Isuzu cab chassis has replaced recently with the latest model.
Wednesday 3rd June 2009
RDO today, I had driven down to Bendalong Point Tourist Park to oversea the loading of Levi's (my son) transportable home.
As I was leaving ,parked by the Shopping complex ( one pub & general store) was the Shoalhaven Mobile Library.
Three guesses what I did:
1. Keep driving....
2. Let down his inside drive tyres..
3. Went in and introduce myself.

After I introduced myself we had a chat about Mobile Library things.
Chris turns out to be their relief driver.
I asked him if he knew about the Mobile Library Wiki.
He promised to find out from his colleagues.
I must keep in touch, he also is going to try to make it to the muster in Sept.
Mobile Library Wiki : YOU WANT TO KNOW MORE PLEASE ASK.

How about that you just never know who you'll run into in our travels.

A mobile library on your phone

According to Times Online, Nokia is working on technology that will allow cell users to listen to audio books on cell phones by inserting a tiny card into the phone.
“The card can be slotted into a mobile phone, dispensing with the need to carry up to six CDs for an audio version of a book.”

What will they think of next, accessing the internet or turning it into a GPS. HoHoHo!

She's Mine

She’s Mine
We see your home standing there
Walked past you knowing you’re there.
We tentatively walk up the stairs
As the doors split into pairs .

Then we look through that door
I’m looking for you.
We tip toe past the attendant
To the aisle where you sit always patient.

You see my incredible smile
Because you know we will run a mile.
So we can read you, your dearer than food
You’re the last in the series and we must know how you conclude

blog learnin'

I have learnt that blogs are not just sites where there is an interaction of similar ideas or question transfer. It is good to know how to create a blog. i do wish that it had a nicer name as I find BLOG a bit gross.
SUGGESTION:New name "Weblog" now that is original.
More good thoughts to come.
